Using Nonverbal Communication

by Elyse
(NY, NY)

I have purposely used nonverbal communication, in particular during the interview process (I am very successful at interviews--I just got two job offers in December, even with the recession).

While I generally think of myself as shy and somewhat low energy, I know these are not traits that people look for in an employee. While I would prefer to sit with my legs and arms crossed, I make sure to be in an "open position" leaning slightly forward and making sure to maintain eye contact with my interviewer(s) and keeping my arms on the table, or trying to gesticulate more than I am comfortable. I make sure to nod and smile, (though this I found is a more 'female' trait) laugh at people's corny jokes, and have a firm handshake while looking them in the eye.

I make sure to say that I am and act enthusiastic about the job, and in fact I've been told I appear to be high energy (at any given moment I'd rather be sleeping!). I also make sure to ask a lot of questions, and really focus on the person while they're giving me the answer. I learned in Psych 101 that people really enjoy hearing themselves talk--and if you keep the interviewer talking, they'll come out with a positive view of the interview!
