Job Search Networking Techniques

Job search networking is the most effective way to find great, unadvertised job leads.

Unadvertised job leads are generally the best job leads, and job search networking is the best route to finding unadvertised jobs.

Here are 9 ways to boost your career networking efforts:

Personal Calling Cards
When you're networking for job leads, personal calling cards will give you an easy and professional way to pass along your contact information to anyone who may be able help with your job search.

Informational Interviews - A Fantastic and Under-Used Job Search Strategy
Most people hesitate at the thought of setting up informational interviews, but this job seach strategy is a truly excellent way to network and develop job leads.

Trade Journals
Trade journals can provide unique insight into your industry and can be a great tool for finding unadvertised job leads and career networking opportunities.

Business Directories
Business directories are another resource for finding career networking opportunities.

Cold Calling for Jobs
Cold calling is not my favorite method of job search networking. In my opinion, there are other, less nerve wracking and more fruitful methods of career networking. That being said, if you'd like to do some cold calling, these tips will help you make the most of your time.

Volunteering to Find Job Leads
Volunteering can provide more than just experience. It can be a great way to develop contacts and learn about unadvertised leads in your field of work.

Professional Associations and Clubs
Joining and becoming active in your professional association can provide excellent career networking opportunities.

Employment Resource Centers
You may be surprised by the number of unadversited jobs you can find at your local employment resource center. Some employment resource centers have job developers on staff who are experts at seeking out unadvertised job leads. As you get to know people at your employment resource center, staff and other clients there can become a good source for job leads.

Trade Shows
Attending tradeshows in your industry can provide excellent career networking opportunities.

You need to be a bit of a detective when you're job searching. These methods of networking for job leads may push your boundaries and take you outside of your comfort zone more than simply responding to advertised job leads. However, that's exactly the point. Unadvertised job leads are harder to find, but it's worth the effort required because once you find the leads, the job are easier to get because there very little competition.
