As a professional resume writer and past interviewer, I have had the opportunity to review hundreds of resumes. Some of the best resumes spoke directly to the position that we were hiring for, but many simply missed the mark entirely. Here are my top three tips for writing a resume that gets you noticed!
- Appearances Matter! - Your email address can provide insight into your personality, but some monikers like "SpicyChic@Hotmail.com", are best kept for your "MySpace" account. Over the years, I've seen several resumes that I've bypassed simply because the email address was "unprofessional". Many internet providers allow for multiple email addresses to be established for free. If yours does not, then sign up for a free email account using your first and last name, or some other variation of your name.
- Spelling counts! - run a spelling and grammar check before submitting your resume. There's nothing more embarrassing than reviewing the resume or cover letter of an "exselent secratery".
-Speak the right lingo! - Every field has its own language, whether it is a specific computer application or function of the job, be sure to include these words and acronyms in your cover letter and resume. Be especially mindful of any keywords that were used in the job description or advertisement of the job for which you are replying.
