Dream Big When You Set Your Goals

by Joshua A. Amodio

Growing up, I was never instructed to set goals for myself, other than the ones that everyone seems to hear "Go to college so you could get a good job". Well, for me, I did that, unfortunately, the good job part was missing.

That's when it finally hit me, that to have a goal in life, you need to really dig down deep inside yourself to discover what it is you are looking for.

I knew what it was that I loved to do, build homes, and my goal revolved around that love. I realized that my goal in life was to help others through my love of building, and that is why I have decided to build "Habit Homes" and "Ronald McDonald Houses".

I set small goals that will someday allow me to build those homes full-time. Small goals, like learning the basics of wiring, plumbing, management, heating/air conditioning (things that I haven't known in the past).

To me, goals need to be something that you can achieve, not necessarily easy, but achievable. When it takes a little bit of work, and you reach that goal, you develop a sense of accomplishment and you begin to believe that your ultimate goal is attainable.

Your goal/dream needs to be something that makes you hurt, in a good way, when you think about it. I have heard people say "If your 'WHY' doesn't make you cry, then it's not big enough".

I look at my goals EVERY morning and know why I am going to work that day. If you haven't developed your 'WHY' yet, keep searching, it's in you. Just take the time to discover it, and when you do, NOTHING can stop you from working towards your goal.
