Of course you can always check out the help wanted section for advertised jobs, but if you're only looking for job leads in the help wanted sections, you're not getting the most out of your newspaper when it comes to job searching. The business section of your local newspaper can provide you with plenty of valuable clues that indicate a company may be hiring. Often newspapers will showcase new businesses that have recently opened or are coming to the area and new products or services launched by existing businesses. All of that information gives you some indication that a company is growing and, therefore, may need to to bring on more staff. When you come across this type of information in your local newspaper, contact someone within the company. You'll already have a good opening to begin a conversation with this person because you'll be able to say, "I saw the article about your company in the newspaper..." and from there you'll be able to ask about any possible job openings now or in the future. It's also wise to check the community news and coming events section in your local newspaper. Look for events that are related to your industry that would provide good networking opportunities. For example, if you are interested in working in alternative health care, and you discover a health fair in your area, go and network. It will be a great opportunity to meet plenty of people in your industry all under one roof. If you check your newspaper regularly for opportunities like this, you'll be surprised be the number of clues to unadvertised jobs you'll find. As you read through your paper, once you've finished reading the help wanted section, read the rest of the paper, and with each item you scan, ask yourself if each bit of information could help in any way with your job search.
